Can Bargnani be considered a bust?

Posted on: January 25, 2008 12:06 am

Even after Andrea Bargnani's great game against the Celtics, the question has to be pondered. Is Andrea Bargnani closing in on becoming a bust? The kid has no confidence in his offensive game, has terrible footwork(note the pathetic head fakes and traveling calls that he gets 2 or 3 times PER game) and he is non-existent on defense and on the glass. Bryan Colangelo might have made one mistake so far, and it might be his pick of Bargnani. Imagine the impact Lamarcus Aldridge would have had down low for Toronto as opposed to Bargnani.  The Raptors would have a post presence and legitimate rebounder to help Bosh out on the glass. I'm quite frankly sick of watching Bargnani with his dumb little pump fake that doesn't fake anyone out except for himself when he travels right after. Any thoughts?

Can Bargnani be considered a bust?

My theory about players is that by the age of 24, players can make improvements, but at that point improvements are only small and incremental at best.  Bargnani is 22, so he still has a chance to make a big "upsurge" in his game by that theory, but honestly I have only seen him play for maybe one game total so maybe he just doesn't have it.

Does he suck because he has a lot to learn still or because he just doesn't have the innate athleticism to really turn into much would be the question?

My take ultimately from the little I know is that he may turn into a decent NBA player, but will probably never live up to the #1 pick.  Sort of like Joe Smith, although these two guys bring different things to the table.  These type of guys typically benefit when going to other teams and no longer have the "high expectations" of being the "#1 draft pick."

Bargnani has the skill set to be a great player in the league. But he just doesn't seem to be learning anything, he's taken a step back from his rookie season and doesn't seem to have any idea what's going on out on the court. He was praised for his good basketball IQ... but I haven't seen it yet, he has trouble even getting in the right position.

Can Bargnani be considered a bust? Not yet. He's actually shooting a better % from three this year as odd as it sounds (Very minimal change but that's the only positive I can find). His low post offense/defense needs work, but it's not as bad as last year.

If anything Adam Morrison/Tyrus Thomas/Shelden Williams/Randy Foye/Patrick O'Bryant(He just hasn't got any PT)/Saer Sene/Cedric Simmons are a bust so far.

IMHO, I think Bargnani will be fine and will eventually be a mini Dirk Nowitzki. Something like a 17 and 7 guy. Not bad, but not elite.

The rumor here in the Bay Area about Patrick O'Bryant is he has a poor work ethic.

Randy Foye had a pretty good rookie season and has merely been hurt and should make Minnesota a bit better when he comes back.

Being a Gonzaga alum, I may be a bit biased about Morrison, but I still think his problem was confidence in the rookie year as he was able to get a lot of shots that he is truly able to make and just missed a lot more of them than I suspect he will in the future.  Depending on what that injury does to him, however, he could be done, though, so who knows.

The rest of those guys you named may be busts but it is always key to look at how old the guy is.  Andris Biedrins and Andrew Bynum basically didn't do squat there first two seasons in the league and there were people trying to call them busts but Biedrins is only 21 and Bynum's only 20 and they are now starting to make some noise.
